How to Build a Website Properly - A Business Owner's Guide
If you are a business owner, and you made the decision to build a website, but you have no idea where to start that is completely normal.Nobody teaches this. You didn't start a business to become an expert in web-design and you shouldn't have to.Most owners in this position want the same thing: something quick, something that goes live within the next week. That instinct makes sense.Time is the one thing you don't have extra and a fast half-finished website is better that no website at all.But here are some things to consider before you start:
- Website it's not just a site with your logo on it.
- A functional page should have it's own SEO, Title and Description. It should be written for somebody who would actually search your business online.
- The CTA form actually needs to send somewhere, to be wired up and properly functional, most of the time it isn't and the customers think you are not present as a business.
- Make sure the layout is fully adaptable on all devices. Prefferably to go with mobile-first layout is the better option, nowdays everybody uses their phone more then computers anyways.
- Be thorough with the content in the website and try to add as many useful sections and infos as possible. More people read and see the business more informations they gather and the trust gap increases.
- Use authentic images always. Placeholder images are fine to use but would never out-perform real quality images of the business in action.
This is where things get complicated, and who you choose to build it actually matters more than you think
Choosing big agency to do work is a reliable solution, they have been on the market long, they have proved themselves and they can deliver. But usually it comes with great cost, much more than what the product would actually be worth and not enough of customer support when something breaks.
The best piece of advice here from our side is to find somebody who operates solo but on a high level, a freelancer or private studio which has been on the market and they know what they doing at this point. Here is the reasoning behind:
- Direct contact with the developer who is building it. (He can tweak it, he will receive your inquiries personally, he is the one who is doing the project and is familiar with it 100%)
- Decisions happen much faster, a small change or a big change like color palette layout change, doesn't go through big queue to get approved, it just gets done.
- Your project is not competing for priority. At an agency you are probably one of many clients split across a team's attention. With solo developer your project is his only priority.
- You are not paying for overhead you will never see. Agency pricing offen includes office space, account managers, project coordinators, and a sales team commision. - None of it relates to your website anyhow. A solo developer's rate reflects the work itself.which is typically why the same quality of build costs much less.
